Writing Down Your Passions

August 16th, 2009

I was talking to Lisa Hagan, of Paraview Literary Agency, one of the premier literary agencies for paranormal and supernatural authors, and I asked her what her advice would be to writers breaking into the market.

Lisa represents about 10 writers in the paranormal market and her advice was simple: Write what your passionate about.

If you’re happy writing, you’ll keep on writing. And, according to Lisa, the paranormal market is like any other market, it can be tough to find an opening, especially now with the publishing industry in a bit of an economic slump. (Did I reach my quota on understatements?)

So, by following your passion, you can keep building your material and driving through any disappointments.

Lisa’s advice can be coupled with my own few words of advice: Write what you know.

At least at first, write about topics that are spiritually and intellectually–and maybe even geographically–close to home. If the material comes naturally to you, odds are you’ll continue the project to completion. As you grow as a writer, you become more confident and can begin to explore other areas of interest.
